Establishing the Motivation

By the power and the truth of this practise,

My all sentient beings enjoy happiness,

and the causes of happiness,

Be free from suffering, and the causes of suffering,

May they never be separated from the great happiness devoid of suffering,

And may They dwell in the great equanimity that is free from passion,

Aggression and prejudice.

Invoking the Lama

O Lama, care for me!

From the blossoming lotus of devotion at the centre of my heart

Rise up, O compassione lama, my only refuge!

I am plagued by past actions and turbulent emotions-

To protect me in my misfortune

Remain as the jewel-ornament on the crown of my head,

the mandala of great bliss.

Arousing all my mindfulness and awarness, I pray!

Four Causes of Renunciation

Joyful to have such a human birth,

Difficult to find, free and well-favoured.

But death is real, it comes wihtout warning;

This body will be a corpse.

Unalterable are the laws of karma,

Cause and effect cannot be escaped.

Samsara is an ocean of suffering,

unendurable and unbearable intense.

Recogning this, may my mind turn towards the practise!

B. The main Preliminary Practises

1. Taking Refuge

From now until I obtain the essence of Enlightenment

I take refuge in the Lama, the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

(combine with prostrations and recite as much as possible)

2. Bodhicitta: Developing the Mind of Awakening

From now until Smasara itself is empty,

I shall strive for the benefit and well-being of all sentient beings

(who were once my very own parents).

Arousing the Bodhicitta

the way to make it arise:

1. to train the mind by means of the four inmeasurables

2. to arouse the supreme mind of enlightenment: the bodhicitta

3. to apply ourselves to the precepts of aspiration and action

GONG NÉ GONG DU PELWAR SHOK

"Precious, sublime bodhicitta:

May it arise in those in whom it has not arisen,

May it never fail where it has arisen

May it go on increasing, further and further!"

# "Precious, sublime bodhicitta" is the intention of wanting all

sentient beings to attain the perfect level of buddhahood.

# The way for it to "arise in those in whom it has not arisen" is the training of the mind by means

of the four inmeasurables.

# The way for it to "never fail" and "go on increasing further and further"

is to arouse teh supreme bodhicitta, and to train in its precepts of aspiration and application.
